From JAPAN- In Fukushima, residents and the fishing industry oppose plans to release water containing radioactive tritium into the Pacific Ocean. Workers have begun removing nuclear fuel from a fast-breeder reactor in central Japan. The Japanese Atomic Energy Agency says it would take 70 years to decommission 79 of its oldest nuclear reactors. A group of Japanese high school students submitted a petition to UN European headquarters in Geneva calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Japan is giving emergency aid to an agency supporting Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip following the US freezing financial assistance. Iran has signed an agreement with Syria to maintain a military presence in the country. French President Macron is calling for the establishment of an independent European Defense Force.
From CUBA- Bolivian President Morales criticized Ecuador for leaving the Latin American alliance known as ALBA, whose goal is a sovereign region. New Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez said dialogue without intervention is the best way to find a solution to problems in Venezuela- this is a marked change from former Prime Minister Rajoy. Then a Viewpoint on the Argentinian economy, which has plummeted under the reign of President Macri. Changes in trade laws, factory closures, and exchange rates have led Macri to ask the IMF for a $50 billion loan on top of the $15 billion already received.
From SPAIN- Alison Hughes begins with a report on a lawsuit against a Spanish judge by Catalan independence leaders still exiled in Belgium. Iran has lodged a lawsuit at the International Court of Justice in the Hague against the US sanctions reimposed by the Trump administration, allegedly to prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons. Britain, France, and the US are poised to renew attacks on Syria, and Russia says another false flag chemical attack has been planned to create justification for airstrikes. In Yemen last week there was another mass murder of civilians by Saudi airstrikes- one third of the 16,000 Saudi airstrikes have hit civilian targets.
