Gerard Kelly is the president of the National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education in England. He is the first gay man to become the president of this association and, at age 34, its youngest president ever. He is also a founder elected member of the Trade Union Congress Lesbian and Gay Committee.

On Saturday 2 November he addressed the joint plenary session of the Workers Out! And Health in Difference conferences, which were held as part of the Sydney Gay Games program. The following is an edited version of his speech.
