On this weekâs episode of Labor Express Radio we return to an issue we covered a month and a half back, but not nearly with the depth we should have. This monthâs edition of Labor Notes, the leading labor news publication in the United States, has an excellent article analyzing the meaning of the so called agreement reached between the Chicago Federation of Labor and Wal-Mart in June. The author of the article, Labor Notes editor Mischa Gaus lay outs out the reality of this surrender by organized labor to the seeming all powerful, and so far unstoppable worldâs number one retail corporation. Mischa describes the quote un-quote agreement as Wal-Mart outmaneuvering the living wage advocates in Chicago. Will hear what he means by this right from the source in the first half of the program.
Later in the program will hear about how the administration at UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago) reclassifies workers in its administrative departments so as to weaken the bargaining power of SEIU Local 73 which represents civil service workers at the university. This issue and the fact that negotiations between SEIU and he university are at an impasse means a strike is very likely starting August 24th the first day of classes for the Fall session.
