Itâs been almost six years since the Abu Ghraib pictures hit the press.
And discussions of torture are still everywhere.
Dr. Sherene Razack spoke on Oct 24, 2009 in Vancouver. Her talk was titled âWe didn't kill 'em, we didn't cut their heads off": Reflections on Torture at Abu Ghraib.
Dr. Razack explores how many contemporary discussions of torture that take place as critique, rely upon, even as they install, the idea that the enemy is culturally different from us. She traces the work done by the idea that Arab/Muslim means a different kind of human that can only be kept in line through violence.
The event was organized by the Centre for Race, Autobiography, Gender, and Age at UBC & Lawyers Rights Watch Canada.
Thanks to David Maidman for recording this event.
Dr. Razack is introduced by Sunera Thobani. Sunera Thobani teaches Women's Studies at the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Razackâs latest book is titled Casting Out: The Eviction of Muslims From Western Law and Politics.
