"Network in Jeopardy: Pacifica and Community Radio" -- that's the title of this special co-production of the National Radio Project and the Institute for Public Accuracy. On this 29-minute program, we take a look at the community radio crisis spawned by the staff lock-out at Pacifica Radio station KPFA. This program will feature a discussion centered on the implications of the struggle over Pacifica -- what it means for community radio stations and what Pacifica's acts of censorship portend for journalism and progressive media.
Syndicated columnist Norman Solomon hosts with guests Aileen Alfandary, co-director of the KPFA news department, and Maudelle Shirek, vice mayor of the City of Berkeley, California. Also, you'll hear from author Matthew Lasar, who wrote a book on the history of Pacifica, in a feature by KPFA reporter Aimee Pomerleau. She interviews members of the KPFA community in a background report on the Pacifica controversy. And, producer Phillip Babich speaks with KPFA broadcaster Dennis Bernstein about what happened the day that Pacifica management pulled the KPFA Evening News off the air mid-sentence.
The National Radio Project produces the public-affairs program "Making Contact" which airs on over 150 stations in the U.S., Canada and South Africa. The Institute for Public Accuracy is a nationwide consortium of policy researchers. This show originated in Oakland, California, and was uplinked to the Public Radio Satellite from KQED-FM in San Francisco.
