ChatGPT produces CO2 equivalent of over 250 transatlantic flights monthly, study finds Other AI carbon heavy hitters include Rytr and Spellbook. Anyone with concerns about the environmental impact of flying commercial should probably be aware of how much carbon is produced by using AI tools like ChatGPT: Each month, the AI chatbot produces more than 260,930 kilograms of CO2—equal to the carbon emissions of 260 flights from New York City to London. The comparison comes from a recent study by KnownHost, a website hosting provider that looked at the carbon emissions of popular AI tools. Its research broke down emissions by how many users each tool has, as well as how energy-efficient it is. For example, Rytr, an AI writing tool, produces 1,057 kilograms of CO2 monthly, and Spellbook, which drafts contracts using AI, produces 20 kilograms a month. However, both produce more CO2 per page view than ChatGPT does. ChatGPT only produces 1.59 grams of CO2 per page view—compared with Rytr’s 10.1 and Spellbook’s 6.5. On the other hand, ChatGPT—which boasts more than 164 million monthly users—is immensely more popular than Rytr and Spellbook. So ChatGPT’s emissions are boosted more by its popularity than contained by its energy efficiency. Data centres, which tend to host AI applications like ChatGPT, will demand ever more energy. Berkeley Lab’s 2024 United States Data Center Energy Usage Report found that data centre energy demand more than doubled from 2017 to 2023, and it looks like such an increase will happen again: According to the International Energy Agency’s Electricity 2024 report, the amount of energy used by recent technological advances like data centres, AI, and cryptocurrency “could double” by next year. A third of that increase would be from just data centres. “Electricity consumption of US data centres is currently growing at an accelerating rate,” according to Berkeley Lab’s report. KnownHost CEO Daniel Pearson said in a statement that these figures show the importance of energy efficiency in AI infrastructure. “As innovation continues into 2025, balancing environmental sustainability will need to become a core focus for tech companies and the users of their tools alike,” he said. And the Biden administration seems to agree: In one of the president’s final executive orders, he offered a solution to data centres’ energy consumption, writing that the US, which houses 33% of the world’s data centres, should operate them using “clean power.” “The United States must not be surpassed in its support for the development, commercialisation, and operation of clean energy technologies at home and abroad,” the executive order said. “The rapid buildout of AI infrastructure offers another vital opportunity to accelerate and deploy these energy technologies.”

You can do something to stop it. In January, the International Energy Agency (IEA) issued its forecast for global energy use over the next two years. Included for the first time were projections for electricity consumption associated with data centres, cryptocurrency, and artificial intelligence. The IEA estimates that, added together, this usage represented almost 2 percent of global energy demand in 2022 — and that demand for these uses could double by 2026, which would make it roughly equal to the amount of electricity used by the entire country of Japan. We live in the digital age, where many of the processes that guide our lives are hidden from us inside computer code. We are watched by machines behind the scenes that bill us when we cross toll bridges, guide us across the internet, and deliver us music we didn’t even know we wanted. All of this takes material to build and run — plastics, metals, wiring, water — and all of that comes with costs. Those costs require trade-offs. None of these trade-offs is as important as in energy. As the world heats up toward increasingly dangerous temperatures, we need to conserve as much energy as we can get to lower the amount of climate-heating gases we put into the air. That’s why the IEA’s numbers are so important, and why we need to demand more transparency and greener AI going forward. And it’s why right now we need to be conscientious consumers of new technologies, understanding that every bit of data we use, save, or generate has a real-world cost. One of the areas with the fastest-growing demand for energy is the form of machine learning called generative AI, which requires a lot of energy for training and a lot of energy for producing answers to queries. Training a large language model like OpenAI’s GPT-3, for example, uses nearly 1,300 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity, the annual consumption of about 130 US homes. According to the IEA, a single Google search takes 0.3 watt-hours of electricity, while a ChatGPT request takes 2.9 watt-hours. (An incandescent light bulb draws an average of 60 watt-hours of juice.) If ChatGPT were integrated into the 9 billion searches done each day, the IEA says, the electricity demand would increase by 10 terawatt-hours a year — the amount consumed by about 1.5 million European Union residents. I recently spoke with Sasha Luccioni, lead climate researcher at an AI company called Hugging Face, which provides an open-source online platform for the machine learning community that supports the collaborative, ethical use of artificial intelligence. Luccioni has researched AI for more than a decade, and she understands how data storage and machine learning contribute to climate change and energy consumption — and are set to contribute even more in the future.

The $3.2tn US company told the Financial Times it had signed a deal to buy 3.5mn credits over 25 years from Re.green, a Brazilian start-up which buys up farming and cattle land. It restores the land by planting native tree species, in projects financed through carbon credits and timber sales. Neither company disclosed a value for the deal, but recent market analysis suggests it could be worth around $200mn. Microsoft’s recent dealmaking has made it one of the biggest buyers of nature-based carbon removals globally. The deal comes as groups including Microsoft, Google and Amazon invest heavily in data centres to cope with the huge demand stemming from the growth of generative AI. But the buildout is leading to a surge in their energy usage and complicating their pledges to investors to curb emissions. President Donald Trump’s incoming administration has downgraded curbing climate change as a priority and instead declared an “energy emergency” to boost fossil fuel production in the US, citing the challenges faced by data centres in meeting energy demands. But US-based tech companies are still for the moment “the biggest buyers” of carbon credits linked to nature restoration projects through agreements to buy credits in future decades, said Thiago Picolo, chief executive of Re.green. “They’re not alone but they’re at the leading edge.” Increasingly energy intensive data centres still obtain power from grids where oil, coal and gas are burnt for fuel. This means tech companies seeking to meet their green pledges rely on buying credits that represent a tonne of greenhouse gases removed or reduced. Tech groups also buy renewable energy credits representing investments in wind or solar at home or abroad. Amazon, Google and Microsoft have all also invested in nuclear energy. David Shayler reveals the damning truth about the catastrophe. The story begins on Friday August 7, 1992, during an MI5 investigation into the Provisional IRA (PIRA the MI5 term) operation on the British mainland. An MI5 officer is on the third floor of the organisation’s building in Curzon Street, drafting the situation report for the investigation into an active service unit (ASU) which has been followed, moving suspicious trucks around West London. Reporting indicates that the ASU is planning a large-scale attack in London, like the ones that took place six months earlier at the Baltic Exchange in the City and at Staples Corner near the M1/M25 intersection. The situation report will go out to all services involved in the operation, updating them on the state of play. That Friday evening, all is calm. The joint Met S Squad/MI5 surveillance team has tracked the lorry to a trailer park in Northwest London. The ASU is under control and it looks like any potential attack will be thwarted and the culprits caught red-handed. This is the last operation with the MPSB (the Metropolitan Police Special Branch), leading the intelligence investigation. Home Secretary Kenneth Clarke has already decided to switch the roles of MI5 and the MPSB for IRA investigations in Britain. After October 1, 1992, MI5 will be in charge and MPSB will offer support. That night, a special operation team makes a covert entry into the lorry yard and drills a hole in the top of the trailer. This reveals that it contains up to 300lbs of home-made explosive and possibly detonators. In the MI5 jargon, this makes the lorry a “vehicle-borne improvised explosive device”. It appears to hold well over twice the amount of ammonium nitrate and sugar (which form the explosive compound) used at the Baltic Exchange or Staples Corner. The intelligence services do not know the actual targets of the potential attack. Officers are speculating that these might include key centres of the UK infrastructure or economy like the Telecom Tower, Tottenham Court Road, Oxford Street, Canary Wharf or even the MI5 building itself. Now that the special operations team has confirmed that the vehicle is ready to be primed, it seems likely that any planned attack is imminent. Over the weekend, the heads of the services involved meet and agree to arrest the ASU when they return to pick up the lorry. Sure enough, in the following days the ASU returns. The Met’s anti-terrorist squad takes control of the operation from intelligence teams because “executive action” – in other words arrests – are imminent. They wait until the members of the ASU -around four or five individuals, some of whom have not been identified – further incriminate themselves by touching or checking the trailer. As the targets gather around the truck, the leader of the surveillance team at the site tries to contact George Churchill-Coleman, the then head of the anti-terrorist squad and one of Britain’s most senior policemen. The man in situ wants to brief Churchill-Coleman with the updates and ask for permission to arrest the suspected terrorists. He tries the operations rooms on the 18th floor of New Scotland Yard. He tries Churchill-Coleman’s mobile number. It is switched off. The New Scotland Yard operations room tries to track down the elusive head of Britain’s terrorist policing – and fails. The officer at the site knows that if he gives the order without first clearing it with his boss he will be to blame should anything go wrong. This is not a matter of legal procedure or a hard-and -fast rule; the officer at the scene can give the arrest order, if he wishes. He decides against doing so. He has his future in the police to think about and, in any case, the Met should be able to track down Churchill-Coleman shortly. The latter does, after all, know that there is a serious counter-terrorist operation proceeding apace. But Churchill-Coleman does not get in touch. Suddenly, the ASU start to file out of the lorry yard. One by one they leave. None of the many of policemen or intelligence officers present dare to give the arrest order…. As the final member of the ASU leaves the yard, he seems to have spotted the surveillance. He smiles and gives a cocky thumbs-up before climbing into a car and roaring off…. When I was arrested and charged this was covered by the BBC and the Brighton Argus which published an article Brighton man charged with terror offences over Hamas comments which both named me and the street where I live. On Caplin’s arrest they printed nothing. Brighton & Hove News went one further with ‘Tony Greenstein charged with terrorism offence’ from which you might assume that I had been found with a bomb in my pocket rather than having published a blog that was not to the Police’s liking. When Caplin, a former Under-Secretary of State for Defence and Veteran’s Minister as well as former Chair of the genocide supporters of the Jewish Labour Movement, was arrested the Jewish Chronicle, which had extensively covered my previous arrest deleted an article on the arrest. Only the Jewish News led on ‘Caplin arrested on ‘suspicion of engaging in sexual communication with a child’. Officers embarked on a harsh crackdown at the London rally, arresting 77 protesters — the highest number seen in over 20 pro-Gaza demonstrations. Vice-chair of Stop the War Chris Nineham, chief steward of the rally, was among those violently arrested at the protest already marred by police disruption. Following pressure from pro-Israel groups, the force backtracked on pre-approved plans for the demonstration to begin at the BBC, claiming it risked disrupting services at a nearby synagogue. Protest organisers, including Stop the War and Palestine Solidarity Campaign, instead planned a peaceful static rally at Whitehall. The Met confirmed the location as “acceptable.” But on the day, the protest was confronted with “extremely heavy-handed and aggressive policing,” a statement by the group said. The police imposed Public Order Act conditions in various areas. Organisers said there was a “series of complex restrictions preventing people from assembling at various points on Whitehall at various times of the day,” given with less than 24 hours’ notice. “As a result, a number of people were arrested without warning, on flimsy pretexts including simply for inadvertently standing in this central area at the wrong time,” they said. Axel Rudakubana, Southport triple child murderer, craved notoriety – The ‘spark’ appears to have been ignited in October 2019, shortly after Rudakubana started in Year 9 at the Range High School in Formby. He rang Childline claiming he was being racially bullied and was taking a knife into school to protect himself, adding: ‘What should I do if I want to kill somebody?’ In a chilling glimpse at what was to come last summer, Rudakubana later returned to the school armed with a hockey stick and settled his perceived grievances by attacking children he held to have wronged him. When the police were called, a kitchen knife was found in his backpack. Prosecutor Deanna Heer KC told his sentencing hearing today: ‘In the days that followed he explained that he hated someone at school who’d bullied him. ‘He felt angry and wanted to kill them. He said he had taken a knife to school but would only use it if the person really annoyed him.’ A classmate told the Daily Mail of that attack: ‘He only stopped when two teachers managed to get hold of him. ‘When we heard it was Axel who had attacked the dance studio, we all said, “Thank goodness it was only a hockey stick he brought in that day”.’ A referral was made to the police, who visited Rudakubana. ‘To them he confirmed that he had indeed taken a knife to school and added that he thought he would use it if he became angry,’ Ms Heer said. ‘The school was informed. By this time, the defendant had been temporarily excluded. ‘But he has admitted taking a knife to school on about 10 occasions, when he did so the school made his exclusion permanent.’ Referrals were made to the Multi-Agency Safeguard Hub (MASH), the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and social services. On October 17, 2019, Rudakubana was enrolled at The Acorns School, Ormskirk, which is a Pupil Referral Unit. During his admission meeting, he was asked why he had taken a knife to school. He replied: ‘To use it.’ ‘The knife incident and then the hockey stick attack seem to have been the start of him becoming obsessed with the most horrific violence, eventually culminating in the attack on the dance studio,’ the source told the Mail. ‘That was the spark which started everything.’ Rudakubana then attended two specialists schools, The Acorns School in Lancashire and Presfield High School & Specialist College in Southport. Teachers were concerned about his behaviour there too. His in-person attendance at Presfield was less than 1%. Rudakubana was known to the local social services, who would request the police come along with them to meetings for their protection. Liverpool Crown Court heard that following reports of incidents at home, the defendant stopped attending school in May 2021. Ms Heer said: ‘On March 17, 2022, he was reported missing. He was found by the police in possession of a small kitchen knife. ‘He said that he wanted to stab someone so that he would get into trouble and his Tik Tok account, which contained embarrassing videos that he was unable to delete, would be closed down by the police. ‘He said he had also thought about poisoning people and/or had tried to make poison for the same reason.’ Prosecutor Deanna Heer said in July 2020 he returned to school under two to one supervision. In February 2021 he was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and in April 2021 he received a formal education and healthcare plan (EHCP). It has now emerged that he was referred to the government anti-extremism scheme Prevent three times before the murders, amid concerns over his fixation with violence. The first, in November 2019, was made because he had been researching school shootings during an information technology class. In February 2021, another referral was made following reports that he had uploaded to Instagram two images of Colonel Gadaffi. And in April 2021, a third referral was made because he had been found researching the London Bridge terror attack. The teenager was spending his time locked away in his bedroom researching genocide and watching graphic videos of murder. ‘He was absolutely obsessed with genocides,’ one senior official was quoted as saying. ‘He could name every genocide in history and how many people were killed – Rwanda, Genghis Khan, Hitler. It’s all he wanted to talk about. ‘Just as some children are fixated on football, they know all the players, all their stats, he was the same about genocidal killers and bloody dictators. ‘If you wanted to know about the IRA’s killing campaign or Colonel Gaddafi’s brutal regime, Rudakubana could tell you all about it. ‘He collected books and literature and read up on it obsessively. He was arrested in March 2024 and pleaded guilty to encouraging suicide, possessing terrorist documents and having indecent images of children. The 764 group has links to the Order of Nine Angles, a Nazi occultist group linked to a series of crimes. Finnigan, who also suffered with a number of mental health problems, communicated with other 764 members on the Telegram, Discord and Snapchat apps. One of his usernames was ACID and he used a Pin code of 1969, the date the Satanic Bible was first published. He chatted to an individual believed to be a young girl who told him she was considering suicide. Finnigan encouraged her to hang herself using a rope and wanted her to stream it online so he could claim it for 764, the Old Bailey was told. Prosecutor Bill Emlyn Jones KC said Finnigan, who was said to be autistic and lived with his adoptive mother, father and biological sister in Horsham, West Sussex, became involved with 764 in October or November 2023. The judge also heard that Finnegan told the group he was planning to kill a homeless person living in a tent near his home as part of a ‘terror week’ advertised by the group which encouraged members to engage in a ‘campaign of violence’. Police never found evidence of an attempt to kill the victim, but a picture of the tent was found in the chat alongside a message from the defendant that said, ‘I’m waiting’. Finnigan also accessed an 11-page terrorist document which provided advice on how to carry out ‘truck attacks’, giving instructions on the type of vehicle and ideal targets. He was arrested last March on suspicion of threats to kill and possession of a firearm, although despite claims made to 764 members online, there was no evidence that he ever had a gun. Searches of his home address revealed a large tapestry of the ‘Satanic Beast’ in his bedroom, knives, swastikas, and pentagrams associated with satanism. A punchbag with a number of slash and stab marks was found outside his bedroom, the court was told. Indecent images of children were found on his electronic devices as well as material bearing the 764 logo depicting murder, mutilation, rape and interference with a foetus. The defendant had filmed himself carving words on to a car bonnet and puncturing the tyres with a large kitchen knife. When asked during a police interview about encouraging the girl to kill herself, Finnigan said his only concern was ‘if she went through with it and I got caught’. RFK to release files on assassination of JFK. James Files on his hit job of taking out JFK. James Files (Sutton) was born in Alabama in January 1942. His family moved to Chicago and he lived there until joining the United States Army and served with the 82nd Airborne in Vietnam (1959-60). After leaving the army he met Charlie Nicoletti, a leading figure in the Chicago Mafia. Files was involved in the Bay of Pigs invasion. In 1962 Files claims that he met Lee Harvey Oswald in Clinton, Louisiana. In 1963 Files was recruited by Nicoletti to take part in the killing of John F. Kennedy. Nicoletti claimed that the assassination was being organized by Sam Giancana, Johnny Roselli and David Atlee Phillips. Files claims that Lee Harvey Oswald was involved in the plot and speculated that his role was to plant the Mannlicher Rifle and shells in the Texas Book Depository. On 22nd November, 1963, Files claims he drove to Fort Worth where he met Johnny Roselli, Jack Ruby and Jim Brading. At the meeting Ruby handed Rosselli an envelope that contained Secret Service identifications and an updated motorcade route map of Dallas. Files and Nicoletti went to Dealey Plaza at about 10 a.m. It was agreed that Files would use his Remington Fireball gun from behind the fence on the Grassy Knoll and that Nicoletti would position himself in the Dal-Tex Building. Files believes that Nicoletti’s bullets hit both John F. Kennedy and John Connally. However, Files claimed that his bullet that hit Kennedy in the head. Apparently Files was given $30,000 for his role in the assassination. Files continued to work for Charlie Nicoletti until he was murdered on 29th March, 1977. Files was arrested on 5th August, 1991 and charged with attempting to kill a policeman called David Ostertag. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison and is currently a prisoner in Stateville Prison in Illinois. In 1994 Files told his story to Joe West. After the death of West the project was taken over by Bob Vernon. The story was eventually appeared in a video The Murder of JFK: Confession of an Assassin (1996). A book on the subject, Files on JFK: Interviews with Confessed Assassin James E. Files (2008). The confession made by Files was undermined by research carried out by Edward Jay Epstein. With the help of private detective, Jules Kroll, Epstein established from telephone records Files was in Chicago, not Dallas, on 22nd November, 1963. Assassination of John F. Kennedy Encyclopedia John R. Stockwell also researched the story and came up with several reasons why it is not true. He points out that Fines makes factual mistakes in his confession about Lee Harvey Oswald, Sam Giancana, and David Atlee Phillips (see below). Stockwell also points out that it was highly unlikely that the Mafia would still be planning the assassination of John F. Kennedy on the morning of 22nd November, 1963.

Ellison, who briefly became the world’s second-wealthiest person last week when his net worth surpassed Jeff Bezos’ for a short time, outlined a scenario where AI models would analyse footage from security cameras, police body cams, doorbell cameras, and vehicle dash cams. “Citizens will be on their best behaviour because we are constantly recording and reporting everything that’s going on,” Ellison said, describing what he sees as the benefits from automated oversight from AI and automated alerts for when crime takes place. “We’re going to have supervision,” he continued. “Every police officer is going to be supervised at all times, and if there’s a problem, AI will report the problem and report it to the appropriate person.” The 80-year-old billionaire also predicted that AI-controlled drones would replace police vehicles in high-speed pursuits. “You just have a drone follow the car,” he explained. “It’s very simple in the age of autonomous drones.” Ellison co-founded Oracle in 1977 and served as CEO until he stepped down in 2014.
