Eventually they were told there would be no further action (NFA). Huge police presence at ex-forces PTSD rehab farm near Bath – live updates A witness has claimed that ‘around 200 officers’ are on the scene There is a huge police presence at a farm that does PTSD rehab for ex-servicemen just outside Bath today (Tuesday, March 30). The incident is happening in Norton St Philip. One witness says “about 200” officers from Avon and Somerset Police are “combing” the fields and a helicopter has landed. The raid is thought to have happened at 5am this morning, when officers are said to have arrived at the property. A witness has said that forensic vans are down by the house which is out of sight of the road. They report seeing police searching vehicles as well as the farmhouse and buildings. The witness reports police using metal detectors. Avon and Somerset Police have been asked for more details.

Facebook and Instagram face fresh EU digital scrutiny over child safety measures LONDON (AP) — The European Union opened fresh investigations Thursday into Facebook and Instagram over suspicions that they’re failing to protect children online, in violation of the bloc’s strict digital regulations for social media platforms. It’s the latest round of scrutiny for parent company Meta Platforms under the 27-nation EU’s Digital Services Act, a sweeping set of regulations that took effect last year with the goal of cleaning up online platforms and protecting internet users. The European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm, said it’s concerned that the algorithmic systems used by Facebook and Instagram to recommend content like videos and posts could “exploit the weaknesses and inexperience” of children and stimulate “addictive behaviour.” It’s worried that these systems could reinforce the so-called “rabbit hole” effect that leads users to increasingly disturbing content. The commission is also looking into Meta’s use of age verification tools to prevent children from accessing Facebook or Instagram, or be shown inappropriate content. The platforms require users to be at least 13 years old to set up an account. It’s also looking into whether the company is complying with DSA rules requiring a high level of privacy, safety and security for minors.

German authorities announced that all Ukrainian military personnel arriving for training in Germany will now be explicitly instructed that it is prohibited to display Nazi symbols. The use of Nazi symbols is banned in both Germany and Russia. Russia has condemned Western support for Ukraine, including the training of its soldiers. Slovakia PM Robert Fico ‘approaching a positive prognosis’ Robert Fico was shot several times at close range by what the authorities say was a “lone wolf” gunman Slovakia’s Prime Minister is steadily approaching a “positive prognosis” after undergoing further surgery, the country’s deputy leader says. Robert Fico, 59, was gravely injured after being shot in the small town of Handlova on Wednesday. He is currently in a serious but stable condition. Officials said it was unlikely he could be moved back to Bratislava in the next few days. Meanwhile, the man charged with his attempted murder appeared in court. It ruled that he be placed in custody until his trial, according to a court spokeswoman. The alleged assailant has not been formally named, but Slovak reports have widely identified him as 71-year-old Juraj Cintula from the town of Levice. The Pravda newspaper described Mr Cintula as a poet, while the Sme newspaper reported that he had been involved in many different politically-based organisations, with various ideologies. Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak said on Saturday the various medical procedures Mr Fico had undergone were “beginning to bear fruit” and that there was no need to formally take over his official duties. He said “several miracles” had taken place at the hospital the prime minister was being treated at, thanks to the efforts of medical staff. “I can’t find words of gratitude for the fact that we are steadily approaching that positive prognosis,” he added. Nevertheless, Mr Kalinak said the prime minister’s condition was still “really serious”. “Certainly, it does not allow us to make such a transfer in the near future — that is, at the end of the weekend.” Mr Fico was shot four times in the stomach and arm at close range as he greeted supporters, and his injuries were said to be extensive and complicated. He is understood to have undergone a number of surgeries, including the latest to remove dead tissue.

This has led to increasingly loud calls for what are called “enhanced efficiencies” – a term drawn from the business world. And some institutions are heeding those calls. They’re drawing wholesale on the logic of the market in their bid to survive. They are becoming administrative universities without truly understanding how such initiatives chip away at the very purpose of higher education: the academic project.
The nature of the academic project differs from institution to institution – some will focus more on workplace employment, others on critical citizenship, and so on. But it will always be about the furthering of knowledge and the development of knowers. In 2011, Benjamin Ginsberg, political science professor at Johns Hopkins University, argued that US universities were losing hold of the academic project by becoming administrative institutions. He also showed that as student numbers increased across the US, the number of academics being employed to teach them and guide their research rose at the same or a slightly slower pace. But there was an astounding simultaneous increase in executive positions, usually people with business rather than academic acumen. Despite these warnings, other countries have followed the US’s lead. South Africa is among them. This is cause for concern for both those inside universities and those in broader society who benefit from having a strong academic sector that fosters sustainable development, builds democracy and contributes to various other public goods…

Meanwhile, recent geopolitics has changed geoeconomic relations, hegemony and its discontents. Laws, regulations and judicial processes are increasingly deployed for political – and economic – advantage. Thus, Western governments have generated inflationary pressures with their economic and geopolitical policies, even if inadvertently. Perceptions of strategic decline are mainly attributable to the ostensibly market-based policies pursued. The European Central Bank has followed US Fed interest rate hikes from 2022. Both still maintain high interest rates, ostensibly to keep inflation in check. Unsurprisingly, most developing country monetary authorities have had to raise interest rates to reduce capital flight and bolster their exchange rates. Such interest rate hikes by central banks have raised the costs of funds, squeezing both consumption and investment. Raising interest rates has proved blunt and limited, while more appropriate measures have curbed inflation more effectively. Instead of checking inflation due to supply disruptions, higher interest rates have squeezed both investment and consumption spending by both the private sector and government. Such cuts have hurt demand, jobs and incomes worldwide.
