From Persecution to Prosecution & The Fight for Exoneration!
Be a witness to history as we take you to the dedication of The Gate Of The Exonerated in NY’s Central Park to pay tribute to the Exonerated Five and excite us all to fight for the wrongly incarcerated.
The Gate Of The Exonerated is the product of years of extensive, in-depth dialogue in the Harlem community and a response to their desire for healing and belonging in the aftermath of the case of The Exonerated Five, and its impact on Black and Latinx New Yorkers. Exactly 20 years ago in December 2002, the convictions of Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, Korey Wise, and Yusef Salaam then referred to as the Central Park Five were vacated.
The experience of The Exonerated Five and their families reflects a historical pattern of unjust arrests and wrongful convictions, of lynching and legal lynching’s of Black and Latinx young people in the US – from the Scottsboro Boys to Emmett Till to the Central Park Five. The Gate Of The Exonerated aims to shed light on wrongful incarcerations that are a product of inequities inherent in the justice system, and ultimately to honor and for restitution to all those affected.
