" One of the more absurd things I’ve done in Haiti is teach Spanish. Not that it’s absurd for Haitians to learn Spanish. They share an island with the Spanish-speakers of the Dominican Republic. Extreme poverty makes young Haitians consider slipping into the DR—or to Cuba, or Venezuela—to join an underground work force and live as second class citizens where even the least bit of Spanish might help.
