In a follow-up interview with UNIFOR Local 222 Political Action Committee chair Tony Leah about the recent CLC convention, Phil notes that it only took 4 days for Justin Trudeau to promote past-CLC President Hassan Yussuff to the Canadian Senate.
Yussuff has been doing favours for Trudeau for years:
1) Yussuff brought Trudeau to speak to a conference of young workers without consulting them. When the young workers physically turned their backs on Trudeau it generated publicity and support. Yussuff chastised them.
2) Yussuff issued an endorsement for Trudeau's former Finance Minister, Bill Morneau, for election as OECD Secretary-General that purported to be jointly issued by the CLC and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Yussuff had failed to consult anyone and most CLC-affiliated unions condemned his action.
3) Yussuff also stayed on as CLC President - in order to forward the Trudeau agenda and keep collecting his salary - after his union, UNIFOR, quit the CLC.
For more on the Yussuff legacy and a "new pulse" for the CLC, listen in to this interview.
