Phil interviews Tony Leah, chair of the Political Action Committee of UNIFOR local 222 at Oshawa, who recently authored an article with Rebecca Keetch, entitled "General Motors Returns to OshawaâBut Offers Only Second-Tier Jobs in a âPop-Upâ Plant."
Leah maintains, while it's helpful that GM is going to reopen production of pickup trucks in Oshawa, the conditions under which UNIFOR has allowed the plant to reopen leaves workers with a tiered wage system, contracted-out work, and an uncertain future.
Leah was a prime mover in Green Jobs Oshawa, which pointed out that corporations have only the bottom-line in mind, and couldn't give a care about the best interests of its workers, the local community, or the environment. Green Jobs Oshawa is continuing to organize for a longer-term vision of public ownership, production for social needs, and a transition to a sustainable future, rather than dependence on the whims of corporations.
