Were joined by Elinor and Steve from the Bristol charity Gender Free Domestic Violence, or Gender Free DV. They are convinced that social services, the police and family courts are getting it wrong again and again in domestic violence cases and new powers under the controlling and coercive behaviour laws are not well understood by professionals. Much, if not all of the funding and research is into male-on-female violence and we were shocked to hear that when interviewing suspects in domestic violence cases the police use a different set of questions for men and women which assume the man is likely to be guilty. Gender Free DV dont do counselling themselves but are happy to signpost anybody to existing services and welcome contributions from survivors of violent and/or sexual abuse, or anyone else who feels theyre on the same wavelength.
