This week Bristols Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) pubs officer Pete Bridle joins us to celebrate after another successful Bristol Beer Festival at The Passenger Shed at Temple Meads. The branch is one of the largest in the country and they have nearly 200,000 members nationally. We discuss the rapid pub closures going on in Britain and ask why thats taking place, child-free pubs, sports pubs and micro pubs which are more intimate and often dont sell spirits. Dermot ORegan is one of the founders of Grow Bristol, dedicated to producing food crops in the urban environment. Trouble is so much urban soil has been contaminated over the years by industrial and domestic waste theyve decided to grow their food hydroponically, that is without soil. Although its not possible for food grown this way to be certified organic by the Soil Association it is probably as, or even more pesticide free than conventional organic food. The urban farmers supply greengrocers as well as some of Bristols top restaurants and lately demand has been outstripping supply. Grow Bristol is looking to expand and Dermot is appealing for anyone who knows of a good indoor space, particularly near housing, high street, or other place that needs greens and vegetables to get in touch.
