Wild rice dominated the diet of the native people in the Upper Great Lakes region. Wild rice can be found from Maine west to Saskatchewan and south to Florida. But its greatest densities occur in northern Minnesota (20,000 acres) and Wisconsin (6,000 acres). Wild rice starts to mature in mid-August and lasts through mid-September.
