Still flying the flag for the Bristol Lib Demsâ âscrap the mayorâ campaign, Dr Gooch will take on the incumbent, Labourâs Marvin Rees, at the ballot box later this year. The medical science consultant will also be up against the Greensâ candidate Sandy Hore-Ruthven in the elections, which are still planned for May 6 despite concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. Announcing Dr Goochâs selection to represent the Lib Dems in the Bristol mayoral race, local group leader Gary Hopkins described her as having a âspirit of openness, integrity, and working in partnership with othersâ that would boost the groupâs campaign to scrap the role of elected mayor in the city. âCaroline is also passionate about tackling the housing crisis with more council house building, and supports reform of our medieval feudal leasehold laws," Cllr Hopkins said. Former Bristol West MP Stephen Williams, who is the Lib Demsâ candidate for the top job at the West of England Combined Authority (Weca), said: âIâve worked with Caroline for a few years and know Caroline is committed to holding a public vote on abolishing the mayoral system. âHer platform covers essential and pressing issues, including green energy and transport, integration of health and social care, and an education system that works for all.â Dr Gooch is also passionate about ethical business practices and patient access to medicines, according to the Lib Dems, who say she trained as a research scientist and now works as a consultant in the pharmaceutical industry and has worked in medical affairs, medical information, and medicines access. In her Twitter bio, Dr Gooch describes herself as a âbiomedical scientist and medical writerâ, âhumanistâ and âliberalâ who asks âa lot of questionsâ. Speaking about her selection, she said: âIâm very pleased to take on the Liberal Democrat candidacy for Bristol mayor. âAbolishing the âspare mayorâ would be a huge step forward for democracy. âThe role is not needed now that we have the Weca âmetro mayorâ.â Dr Gooch said the role of Bristol mayor carries "too much power" and enables the views of local councillors to be overridden. A highly lucrative asset, the economic potential of continued development on Bristols harbour is unlikely to have gone unnoticed by the council, much of the docks already stacked with high end multi-story housing. Mark Rolt - who owns a yard near the SS Great Britain and has worked on boats in the city since 1986 - said: "Having experienced the changes over the last 30 years, it seems obvious. "In my view, the 48 hour policy is just another move towards either privatising the docks or making it more attractive to developers. "If you remove the boats, the potential for development becomes easier to realise." And its not only businesses who are worried about what the future may hold. Mandy Sherman (pictured), 37, is chairwoman of Bristol Boats Community Association, a group formed to empower the citys boating community. A major review of how the harbour is run was launched in 2019 - but it will not be completed until July 2021, leaving businesses and residents worried about what will happen in the future. Ms Sherman, a mother of three born and raised in Bristol, fears that she and others will be excluded from the consultation process. She said: "Weve heard nothing [about the review]. "Communication between berth holders and the harbour authority has been really poor and theres a worry that key decisions that will impact everyone around the harbour will be made without the input of Bristols boating community." According to a council document called the Bristol City Docks review project, any review would "agree and implement (an) operating model and business plan that complements city initiatives". Relating to fees and charges, the document points out that Bristol is "cheaper than many other areas" and states that "in order to become cost neutral to the city, the pricing structure would have to change". Both berth holders and businesses could be subject to lease reviews, raising concern for future stability. Outlining its vision, the document places commercial success at the top of the list. Bristols harbourside evokes an impassioned response among many people and one regular visitor to the area articulated what an important role the docks plays to the city. They said: "The boats along the waterfront, the busy working boat yards - this all represents hundreds of years of maritime heritage in the city. "Its what draws me here - the harbourside in general is probably one of the reasons why Bristol has become so popular." VAERS: The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) is an early warning system to detect possible safety problems in U.S.-licensed vaccines. - Most of the side effects with the first dose were mild, and included pain or swelling around the site of the injection. The data from the study suggests people who have previously had Covid-19 are almost twice as likely to experience one or more mild whole body (systemic) side effects, compared to those who have not had the virus (33% vs 19%) from a Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine dose. According to the latest data from the Zoe Covid Symptom Study app, the most common mild whole body (systemic) side effects were fatigue (9%), headache (8%) and chills or shivers (4%). Tim Spector, lead scientist on the study and professor of genetic epidemiology at Kingâs College London, said: "This data set is a unique look at those who have been vaccinated in the real world outside trials, and so far the post-vaccine effects we see are mild and in the minority of people. "Itâs interesting to see that those with previous Covid are more likely to experience these mild after effects than naive subjects. âThis could be good news, as a larger response like this suggests that those getting a first dose after having had Covid are generating a stronger immune reaction and may get greater protection from just a single shot of the vaccine.â Most mild whole body (systemic) side effects appeared in the first two days after the vaccination and only 3% of people have any after effects beyond three days. The figures, based on a sub-sample of almost 40,000 vaccine doses, suggest that 37% of people experienced some local side effects after the first dose, and 45% after the second. While 14% of people reported at least one whole body side effect within seven days from the first dose compared to 22% from the second dose, possibly indicating a stronger immune response after the second dose. The data found that 13% of vaccinated men, and 19% of vaccinated women, reported at least one systemic side effect within seven days.

Coronavirus spread more rapidly in areas with a lot of participating restaurants, Fetzer found, and infections in those areas slowed after the scheme ended. Fetzer used rainfall to try to estimate whether the increase was caused by the programme. He found that in areas that had a lot of rain during lunch and dinner hours on Mondays to Wednesday that month, fewer people ate out and fewer people were infected. The same pattern was not visible if it rained on other days of the week, suggesting that the scheme itself was directly responsible for the increase in infections.

Israel as a regional power Thus the rise of Israel as a key node in Chinaâs Silk Road grand strategy not only elevates Jerusalem in Chinaâs strategic calculus, but as Jean Michel Valantin of The Red Team Analysis Society argued, also presents a new status of Israel from a âprotected powerâ of the US to an âintegrated regional powerâ in its own right, transforming Israelâs traditional narrative of seeking âprotectorsâ to one of seeking partners. The emergence of Israel as a Mediterranean energy player, its continued stability and robust military power in a neighborhood of unstable and weakening Arab states, and outreach to the eastern hemisphere by joining Turkey and Egypt in their applications to the China-led Shanghai Cooperation Organization, is thus slowly creating a new regional and international systems of shared interest between Mideast countries and the Middle Kingdom. Nonetheless, Syria remains a thorny issue between Israel and China as well as with Russia and India, due to Jerusalemâs support for the opposition that consists of jihadists from these countries. The August 30 terrorist attack on Chinaâs embassy in Kyrgyzstan by Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP/ETIM) in Idlib, Syria, financed by the re-branded al Nusra Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (JFS) and coordinated from Turkey, demonstrates how terrorist haven in Syria is increasingly threatening Chinaâs energy, maritime, and human security. With Russia, China and India now increasing support for the Syrian government that is helping them fight Eurasian militants in the Army of Conquest, while Israel understandably sides with Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar to back them, this risks misunderstanding and miscalculation between Jerusalem and rising Eurasian powers. As such it is important for Israel to establish a cooperative platform for deconfliction and crisis management with China regarding Syria, as it has done with Russia, especially now that Chinese military advisors are on the ground and will likely increase its footprint with the recent military agreement with Damascus. If Israel could balance its status as a traditional âprotectorateâ of Uncle Sam and its emerging trajectory as a âregional powerâ with additional partners, and take stock not only of US interests but also legitimate interests of new Mideast actors such as China and Russia, it could help manage the transition and maintain relative stability as the greater middle east continues to converge with Chinaâs Afro-Eurasian integration project. And along with this, perhaps a resurrection of Buntingâs Cloverleaf world and a return to history.
